POP IS ART
Epiphany
This remarkable song cycle, a discrete journey along the curl of emotion and the small fractions of life,
is a collective, circular anthem for all seasons, a summer breaks into fall, then winter, then spring and
back to summer record for just us folks, those lost and waiting to be found and those found looking to get
lost in ourselves, in our surroundings, in our time.
Stroking his brush over a wide canvas, mixing pleasing, collaborative colors and ideas sprouting more ideas
still, Scott McGinley has fashioned a musical quilt of eleven songs that bleed into and cross paths with
each other so that they work as well on their own as they do in tandem. I like to think of this album as
an eleven-song movement meant to be heard from start to finish; it is in this form that Epiphany wields
the most power. I think McGinley would agree, although he would probably add that it's okay to cherry
pick, too; the wonderful, straight-ahead pop song, "Let Me Be the One," and
the go-go-and-punk-meet-Southern-California pop, beat-crazy "Are You a Boy or a Girl"
are perhaps the ripest fruits on hand for such single-serving simplicity.
But for those ears looking to be challenged by these proceedings, starting at the beginning,
curled up on the sofa or sitting on a comfortable chair at rapt attention, is the best, and
most rewarding, course to maneuver. And there, at the beginning, as the rock tones of
"All I Know" suddenly morph into a distillation of Beach Boys harmonies, accented by horns,
orchestration, and the greatest, most expressive instrument of all, sleigh bells, your
journey truly begins, ending with a short, sharp, gospel-tinged shock of epiphany.
The sweetly-sung reflection of lessons learned from investing in the faith that sees
inspiration fold into musical creation, "Here Comes the Music," peppered with lively
banjo accents and typically rich harmonies (a Pop is Art trademark), leads into a
complex and ambitious seven-song suite whose elements weave in and out of and around
each other as they slide by ghosts of Beach Boys, Supertramps, Beatles, and
Pink Floyd on the way to a realization of the true meaning of life both in the here and now and on the other side.
On this side, the richness of the arrangements and the integration of such profound
ideas and ideals present throughout this Epiphany are testament to McGinley's skill
as both composer and performer. He seems to just know how much instrumentation to
apply here and what to leave out there, which flourish to let flower and which turn
of phrase to abandon, all for the good of the whole. He just seems to know.
And now you know. You know the path to pursue as you let the sounds of this
Epiphany melt around you, your hopes, your dreams, and, yes, your nightmares
in tow. It's all a part of the process, says McGinley in these wonderful songs,
and it's time you learned how to pass through it. It is how it is, perched
on the curl of emotion, looking for answers, in the summer, in the fall,
in the winter and in the spring, in our time.
It is, indeed, an epiphany worth savoring.

JAMIE HOOVER & BILL LLOYD
Paparazzi
Paisley Pop is proud to release the debut collaboration from
two legendary figures of power pop... Jamie Hoover and Bill Lloyd
with special guest drummer, Dennis Diken (of the Smithereens!).
Separately Jamie Hoover and Bill Lloyd have established themselves
as luminaries of Power Pop during their 20+ years in music. A
joint project between the two was as natural of a progression
as 1-4-5. Joined by Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken, their collaborative
debut is everything a fan of their previous works could ask for,
with songs influenced equally by The Beatles, early Big Star,
Anglo pop and Everly Brothers-styled country; in addition to the
requisite big, ringing guitars. .

MICHAEL MAZARELLA and the Fellows of Mortimer
Only Hope For Winter (DVD)
DVD project from Rooks-front man which debuts with six unreleased songs(only 3 of which will appear on the next Rooks album) and a total of 21 songs recorded over the last year in the studio with Ex-Records guitarist Huw Gower(and David Johansen, Graham Parker), Dave Rave(Teenage Head) and Greg Field(Ronnie Spector) helping out with their many talents. Expertly shot and tastefully edited, with the occasional cool effect to balance the intensity of the music assure that is far from any hack-job. It`s a gripping, intense viewing experience for any Rooks fan, start to finish. It represents and holds up the legacy of Mazzarella`s songs wonderfully, artfully and the reinterpretations of some songs in the Rooks catalog are truly extraordinary.
You will see and hear the musicians spontaneous and free while working from hastily recollected crib-notes - without rehearsals and often making it up as they went along. Simply revisiting old Rooks standards and repainting them by the numbers wasn`t good enough, wasn`t much of a challenge. Taking something old, borrowing and reworking made their playing come to life. Before now, Vows, Better Start Right Now and Trip had never been performed live at the piano. To this writing, Wish You Well and War have never been played in public! Six songs are new to all fans including three (Nightfall, Blue and Long Ago) from The Rooks` next album. And yes, the band`s power pop classic Reasons is also on the set-list, only now wrapped around a folksy Donovan meets Nick Drake slant courtesy of Huw Gower`s inspired arrangement. From the tongue-in-cheek disclaimer to the final falling notes of the cinematic title-track Only Hope For Winter, one thing is certain; You will be viewing a DVD unlike any other.
Filmed over numerous sessions and hours away from New York City, this was a true labor-of-love project that took over a year to reach its completion. Many takes involving lighting and camera arrangements, unrehearsed, receptive musicianship and lots of pizza and beer add up to bring you a very special show. With twenty-one selections in all, this DVD is a wonderful addition to every music fan`s collection.
