ABSOLUTE GREY
Greenhouse - 20th Annivesary
Special Edition
"Beth Brown's melodic yearning
hints at an alternate universe in which R.E.M. was femme-fronted."
-Andy Beta, Pitchfork Media
In the 1980's, Absolute Grey was part of an indie rock sound that
included R.E.M., Rain Parade, Let's Active and Dream Syndicate
- all of whom were fans of Absolute Grey's electric folk rock.
Led by vocalist Beth Brown, the band recalled early Jefferson
Airplane and Fairport Convention mixed with the modern psychedelic
guitar sounds of Echo & The Bunnymen. Never before on CD,
their 1984 debut LP "Greenhouse" has now been remastered
and expanded to a 2-CD set with a bonus disc of unreleased 1984
live material. Absolute Grey were long time favorites of Forced
Exposure magazine and the 24 page booklet includes liner notes
by Byron Coley and Lester Bangs biographer Jim DeRogatis
A joint release from DBK Works and Paisley Pop. .
WOULD SOUND GOOD ON A MIX TAPE WITH: Dream Syndicate, Jefferson
Airplane, 28th Day, Echo & The Bunnymen,
The Rain Parade.

AUDIBLE / SWIVEL CHAIRS
Sidetrack Stars
Sidetrack Stars is a 12-song split CD from Philadelphia band Audible and Philly/New York duo the Swivel Chairs. Each band contributed 6 songs to the disc, which will be released on October 26, 2004 by New Jersey’s FDR Records.
The band Swivel Chairs began at Rowan University when Jeremy Grites and Jay Brown, two music-obsessed, dormitory suite-mates, decided to try writing and performing their own songs together on acoustic guitars. Twelve years later, they're still at it, and going strong. Though their sound and cast of supporting players has evolved and expanded, Jeremy and Jason remain the core of the band. Song styles range from jangly, retro-pop to old country, and from quirky, angular rock to quiet acoustic laments.
The year 2003 saw the release of their retrospective 5-disc boxed set on Par 3 Records, followed by a new full-length CD entitled "A Late Day For Regrets" on Paisley Pop. This year, in addition to contributing to Sidetrack Stars, the 'Chairs have been included on several recent compilation CDs at home and abroad and have released a split single with friends Matty Charles & the Valentines. They are currently working on their next full-length disc due next year.
Audible began in early 2000 as the solo musical indulgence of Mike Kennedy, heretofore known only as the drummer for several well-known Philadelphia bands (Lefty's Deceiver, matt pond PA, Mazarin). Using a borrowed sm57 and a five dollar guitar, Mike began sketching out "songs" on a four track, handing out tapes only to trusted confidantes. Over time, Mike had to admit that Audible had grown beyond mere side project status, because people kept joining the band. Eventually, Mike added bandmates Mary Garito, Jim Kehoe (also of mpPA) and bassist Kristine Muller (Lefty’s), and the group has performed extensively in the Philly area, opening for bands such as Bright Eyes, Momus, and the Wrens.

THE
BROKEN HEARTS
Want One?
"11 rare bonus tracks tacked on, all of which are
absolutely incredible garagey folk-rock stuff"
-Alan Wright, Cosmik Debris
Originally released in 1985, THE BROKEN HEARTS were the precursor
to NYC's THE ROOKS. Featuring Rooks members Michael Mazzarella
and Patrick Yourell, THE BROKEN HEARTS from Connecticut issued
a single LP full of great Mersey beat styled harmonies and chiming
guitars. The reissue features an amazing 11 Bonus Tracks including
live cuts and demos for songs that were to be on the never released
second album.
"Observant powerpop fans will recognize that the Rooks’
Michael Mazzarella and Pat Yourell cut their teeth in the early
80s with this obviously new wave-influenced outfit. This CD reissue
features the 1985-released record as well as 11 bonus tracks.
Anyone who likes the Rooks will enjoy the simple tuneful fun that
permeates this disc as Mazzarella & Yourell together with
Tom Bittel and Jamie Beckett parlay a blatant Merseybeat inspiration
into lively slices of pop magic. Highlights include the jumpy
“When I See You Looking My Way,” the beaty “Tuesday
Evening Girl” and the instructional country folky demos
(“That Kind of Girl,” “Not Really In Love”)
that close the bonus material."
-Kevin Matthews, Fufkin.com.

BROWN MOUNTAIN LIGHTS
Live At The Cave
From North Carolina, this was one of my favorite new albums in 2003 (that's not on my label...). It's Americana infused twangy pop all recorded live with immaculate sound. Features former Hanks and Ruin leader Jeff Hart who trades off songs and harmonies with Janet Place (who's voice reminds me of kd lang). They recruited Panther Branch Boys guitarist Greg Bower and performed their first club show in May 2001 at a sold out Carrboro Artscenter stage in front of their heroes Buddy and Julie Miller. A couple of months later along with former Ruin drummer John Flowers joined on. Finally to complete the band, Chatham County Line's Ned Durant replaced former gladhands and Two Dollar Pistol bassist pat mcgraw just before the live cd was recorded. This album takes a bit of Everly Brothers harmony, some Rubber Soul era songwriting and permeates it with twangy c&w/bluegrass guitar. It's really brilliant.
