JEFF LEWIS
ponder the drama
New From Paisley Pop
Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, Jeff Lewis was part of the early group of musicians who spawned the Windbreakers. His song, "Young Republicans" was featured on their debut EP "Meet the Windbreakers", back in 1982. While the WB's followed a Bob Dylan and Byrds route, Jeff's music veers out of jangle pop territory to more AAA Alternative Pop of artists like Bruce Cockburn,
Edwin McCain, Dave Matthews,Sister Hazel, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Lifehouse which isn't a bad thing.
Jeff is an incredible multi-instrumentalist, sort of like a progresso Paul McCartney while his vocals remind me a little bit of the clear voice of Phil Ochs crossed with his old bandmate and friend Bobby Sutliff.
Here's what he has to say about himself:
Self taught guitar, bass, drums. Most influences are English...Richard Thompson, Kinks,Who,Comsat Angels,Mott The Hoople,Bowie,King Crimson,Roxy Music,Gabriel-era Genesis. I think my drumming shows a definite Bruford,Phil Collins influence.
After my short time in The WB's I was in Radio London. We put out a double single pac called "Songs From Dark Rooms" in '83. Around this time Sherry Cothren was in Beat Temptation with Tim Lee and Bobby's brother Robin. She and I started writing songs then and have continued to do so up to the present. In '87, The Big Picture put out "Homeless House", the first record on the Terminal label.

LONESOME BROTHERS
Pony Tales
Jim Armenti (guitar, vocals), Ray Mason (bass, vocals), and Tom Shea (drums) form the core unit of the Lonesome Brothers. Occasional members Doug Beaumier (pedal steel, dobro) and Jim Weeks (keyboards and sundry key backing parts, including production) join, too. Vocals are swapped, but the tone remains consistent: dusty, reflective, and genial. Breezy western swing ("Next Time") mixes with rootsy mid-tempo rock (Gail Table For One"), twangy ballads (The Drinking Side"), and jitter-buggin' boogie ("Old Rails Rust"). There's an easygoing air but a sneakily pointed wit behind the Brothers' 4th release, Pony Tales. There's shades of Bob Dylan and Neil Young, and it is deeply colored by the Bakersfield sound and southern rockabilly, not to mention personal hard-won truths and a warm demeanor.

LONESOME BROTHERS
Lonesome Brothers
Fans of Rockabilly and Insurgent (alt.) Country will enjoy this finely crafted second release by the Lonesome Brothers. Imagine The Stones circa Let It Bleed meet Hank Williams, and you have a good idea of how the band rocks out in a country style.
Guitarist/singer Jim Armenti and bassist Ray Mason contribute the 13 originals collected here, and the songwriting is really the thing, as "Eyes Wide Open," "Strictly Pavement," "Three Sisters," "You Don't Have My Number" and "I Cry for You" show a fine ear for songcraft; one can hear a tune like "I Need a Second Chance" easily being covered by a modern-day hat-hunk country star. A promising debut effort.
