THE BROKEN HEARTS
Before going on to mastermind the Power Pop acclaimed NYC band, The Rooks, Mike Mazzarella sharpened his teeth in the early 80’s in Hartford, CT with The Broken Hearts. Originally released as a vinyl LP in 1985 with 9 songs, Paisley Pop is reissuing this nearly forgotten gem, a collector’s piece amongst pop fans, for the first time on CD. In addition to an expanded booklet including many photos from the band’s heyday, the CD also includes 11 BONUS TRACKS!
Mike Mazzarella’s jangle pop songwriting earned his band The Rooks a spot on Rhino Records’ Poptopia Power Pop Classics of the 90s…The Broken Hearts share the same fondness for Mersey Beat music.
“It really is hard not to be immediately won over by the Rooks' please-pleasing mix of guitar chime, catchy hooks, and neatly-stacked vocal harmonies, the kind of ingenious and honest simplicity that enables them to base a whole song around a semi-borrowed phrase like "I'm Down" and not only get away with it, but leave us smiling in the process. The Rooks are a one-of-a-kind Anglo-influenced outfit, deftly dropping hints and touches of any and everything poppish, from traces of "Hey Carrie Ann" by the Hollies, to shades of the Everlys, Crickets” --CMJ

JASON BYRD
Jason Byrd (guitar/vocals) began his musical career in his late in a blues/rock trio played original material penned by Byrd, as well as classic rock covers. He learned his chops playing around the Charlotte, North Carolina area for the next three years. After that band split up, Jason continued to perform in jazz ensembles; often attending clinics or university-sponsored jam sessions with artists like Jason Marsalis, Irwin Mayfield, and Doc Holiday. In spring of 1997, Jason joined the then Grateful Dead cover band, Wavy Train. He brought his originals to the table and the band began polishing their image as one of North Carolina’s best original groups. In the summer of 2001, Wavy Train released a live CD of songs (“One Big Happy Accident”) written by Byrd, including one co-write with band mate Cal Comerford.
However, as popular as they’ve been in the bar circuit, Jason found he needed a solo project for channeling his Beatles/Beach Boys/ Elvis Costello influences.
Eventually this led him to Jamie Hoover, the talented and respected songwriter, musician, and producer (Spongetones/ Don Dixon/ Hootie & Blowfish/ Smithereens) who helped Jason craft his solo debut.
As a solo performer, Jason has opened for the likes of Little Feat, Marti Jones and Don Dixon. He also performs regularly at various the International Pop Overthrow festivals (New York and Baltimore so far) as well as gigging around the Maryland and North Carolina areas.
Jason’s version of the Beatles classic, “Something,” can be found on the Jealousy Records George Harrison Tribute CD.
